The word spacesaver (or two words space savers) can refer to just about any type of furniture that is designed to make best use of limited space. A bathroom spacesaver is no different, except that the term is often used for an over the toilet storage unit, more often than a general storage unit to go anywhere in the bathroom.
Over toilet storage is not necessarily a contemporary idea, but the idea has become more widespread in modern times. Even so, there are perhaps not as much in the way of over toilet furniture as there is above the wash basin cabinets and shelves, or medicine cabinets, or corner bathroom storage furniture.
If you really want to make full use of the space above the toilet, then the obvious choice is to have over toilet cabinets and shelves that stand on legs, and are freestanding astride the toilet itself. These are the units that are often referred to as bathroom spacesavers or toilet etageres. That way, you have the choice of height which, if you want, you can extend well up towards the ceiling.
With this type of bathroom furniture, though, you need to ensure that the legs are strong enough to take the load. Cheap but tall over the toilet storage units can be a bit weak at the knees, so to speak, so do take care. However, you will find that most freestanding over toilet units, in either wood or metals such as chrome and stainless steel, are built to high safety standards and fulfill their task. Wooden etageres and spacesavers will normally have cabinets plus shelves, while the metal only varieties will be shelves only. The number of shelves can range from 3 to 7.
If you simply want a toilet shelf or shelves, or a cabinet, wall mounted above the toilet, then that is an option. In fact any bathroom wall shelf or cabinet can be fixed to the wall above the toilet. With this option, though, you do have the extra task of fixing to the wall, and they will probably make little use of the above toilet space.
